Desktop GIS

ForestrPro Desktop GIS for Windows

Make and edit your forestry map layers at a desk, with a full GIS, then publish them to your team's ForestrPro project. The dashboard shows them, and field teams take them offline in the Android app.

Download

Version 1.0.0, for Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit).

Check a download with its SHA-256 checksum.

What it does

  • Your ForestrPro projects. Sign in with your ForestrPro account and open any project of your teams. Each project is kept as a working copy on your computer and saved as you work, so a dropped connection loses nothing.
  • Forestry layers ready to use. Compartments, planting and felling areas, extraction routes, stacking areas, roads, watercourses, exclusion and conservation zones, survey and vegetation points, each with its fields, values and style. Areas and lengths are measured when you publish.
  • A full GIS. Draw and edit features, edit attributes in a table, measure, label and style layers, change coordinate systems, and import and export GIS data. GeoJSON is what's shared with your team; other formats are converted on import.
  • QGIS projects. Import a .qgs or .qgz project (Project › Import › QGIS Project) and its layers come across with their styles: categorised, graduated and rule-based colours, symbols and labels. WMS, WMTS and XYZ layers are added as online layers, and rasters keep their transparency and scale range. Anything it can't bring over (such as a WFS or PostGIS layer, or a raster's colouring) is listed when you open the project.
  • Publishing that doesn't overwrite your team. Publish sends your changes to the project. If someone published the same layer since you opened it, you choose: take theirs (keeping yours as a copy) or publish yours.
  • Field tasks on the map. The team's tasks with a location appear as read-only layers, so you see the work in the field beside your maps.

Getting started

  1. Install ForestrPro Desktop GIS (setup.exe, no administrator rights needed) or unzip the portable version.
  2. Open the ForestrPro tab and choose ForestrPro Projects. Sign in with the email and password you use in the app and the dashboard.
  3. Open a project, add forestry layers from the ForestrPro tab, draw them on the Edit tab, then choose Publish Changes.
  4. In the dashboard, a project's Open in Desktop GIS button opens it straight in the desktop app.

Owners and managers of a team publish map data and create projects; members can open projects and get the latest. Your sign-in is kept in Windows Credential Manager, never in project files.

Requirements

Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, with graphics that support Direct3D 12 or OpenGL. An internet connection is needed to sign in, get the latest and publish; editing works offline.

Licence

ForestrPro Desktop GIS is based on RustGIS, free and open-source software by the RustGIS contributors, under the Apache-2.0 licence. ForestrPro's changes are under the same licence; the licence, notices and third-party licences are installed with the program.
