Import GIS data (GeoPackage, Shapefile, KML…)

Bring boundaries, sample points and hazard layers into ForestrPro from GeoPackage, Shapefile, GeoJSON, KML, GPX, CSV or a QGIS project.

  1. Copy the files to your phone, for example from email or cloud storage.
  2. Go to More → GIS import and export.
  3. Tap Choose files to import and select the files. For a Shapefile, choose all of its parts together: the .shp, .dbf, .prj and .cpg. A ZIP of any of these works too.
  4. Check each layer's name and its ID field (each feature's ID is kept as its reference), then import it.

Imported layers appear on the map, each in its own colour (or, from a QGIS project, coloured as the project colours them). You can turn them on and off under Map layers.

What can be imported

GeoPackage, Shapefile, GeoJSON, KML and KMZ, GPX, CSV with latitude/longitude or easting/northing columns, and QGIS projects (.qgs or .qgz) with their data files. Georeferenced PDF maps and GeoTIFFs, picked or inside a ZIP, go to the Maps library.

Importing a layer again

If a layer was imported before, ForestrPro tells you how many features are new. Choose Add only the new features or Import as a separate layer.

"Can't import: the coordinate system isn't recognised"

ForestrPro won't guess a coordinate system, because a wrong guess would put everything in the wrong place. In QGIS, reproject the layer to British National Grid (EPSG:27700) or WGS84 (EPSG:4326) and export it again.

Make tasks from a layer

For a layer of work locations, such as trees to fell, tap Create tasks on the layer. You get one task per feature, each keeping the feature's ID as its reference.

What comes across from a QGIS project

  • Vector layers (GeoPackage, Shapefile and other files): choose the project together with its data files.
  • Colours: a single colour, or categorised and graduated colours (for example each species, or each age class, in its own colour). The layer's card shows the legend; tap Use one colour instead if you prefer. A category switched off in QGIS stays hidden. Symbols, line widths and labels aren't carried over, and a rule-based or expression style is shown in one colour.
  • GeoTIFFs (such as aerial photos) go to the Maps library and are prepared for offline use. Choose the .tif files with the project.
  • XYZ, WMS and WMTS layers are added as online layers. They're drawn over the base map when there's a signal, but aren't kept for offline use. Setting up a WMTS layer needs a signal, and it must offer Web Mercator (EPSG:3857) tiles. A service on a plain http:// address isn't loaded, for security.
  • Not imported: WFS and database (PostGIS) layers, and rasters other than GeoTIFF. Each is listed with the reason, and how to bring it in instead.

Online layers are listed under Online layers on this screen, where you can turn each one on or off, change its opacity, or remove it.
